I have a special place in my heart for the older generation. My fondest childhood memories mostly center around my two grandmothers. I had the wonderful privilege of being within walking distance of one, and just a short drive from the other.
My grandmothers taught me all the lessons a girl would need to navigate through life well- love Jesus, love your family, serve and give without expecting anything in return, open up your home to others, be resourceful, and pinch those pennies.
In exchange for using my young and nimble hands and feet, they allowed me be privy to their worlds. Offering to refill glasses allowed me to sit in on adult conversations, running errands allowed me to participate in planning the next big social event. They treated me more like a friend rather than the nuisance that a 10-13 year old can be. My time at their homes and on their porches became an anchor in my life- places of love and acceptance, places of nurture and teaching, and places of respite from childhood worries.
Today, only one of those special ladies is still alive and I love to make her feel special anytime I can. She goes by ‘Mema’ and I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone with such impeccable and particular taste. This can prove to make gift giving tough unless you know her- once you do, you can spot the things she’d love in an instant.
Here is a little round-up of Spring gift basket ideas for a grandma, a Mema, or that sweet little lady down the street that could use some love and attention.
Pretty napkins– When I was younger and spending more time with Mema, her house was a constant carousel of visitors coming to chat over a slice of her chocolate pound cake and a glass of sweet iced tea. She always had pretty seasonal napkins to serve with. Today, she can enjoy these pretty napkins with her lunch, or still have that pretty napkin when a friend comes to visit.
Moisture– If I’ve learned anything from being with the elderly it’s that moisture is king. Creams and ointments become a valuable commodity since the body produces and retains less hydration and collagen in the latter years. My grandmother loves a good hand cream, facial moisturizer, or body lotion any day of the year.
Facial roller– This is a bit of a novelty item that I thought my grandmother would love. It’s made of jade, so it’s cool to the touch. The idea is that rolling the skin can increase circulation and prep it for the prized creams that await. You can read more about them here if you are wondering more about the benefits and uses. And yes, I bought one for myself too. 🙂
Talcum powder– My grandmother loves a good body powder. I usually look for one with a nice clean scent and pretty packaging.
Sweets- World Market is my favorite place to find nostalgic candies and gums. I don’t know if these are a favorite, but she will sure love the lemon mint and appreciate the lovely appearance.
Something to give– I spotted a package of individually wrapped chocolates and knew it would be perfect for Mema. She loves the look of vintage papers and I thought it would be perfect for her to give away as a small token gift for anyone who comes to call. She will be proud to have something to give nurses, family, grandchildren, or friends since she is no longer able to get out and shop for others.
Homemade Card– I always have my children write or draw a little something to send in the mail to add a more personal touch. It’s easy to purchase a card, but made by hand always brings a bigger smile.
A gift basket doesn’t have to be this elaborate, especially for someone you don’t know very well. A simple basket of lotion, tissues, and a small potted flower can spread the love for weeks to come.
It’s the time and attention given that mean the most to these precious ladies (or gentlemen). It’s nice to be remembered by the people in their lives. They can’t get out like they used to and their social circles grow smaller with every passing year. A small token dropped in the mail or by their home can brighten their day, week, or a whole season.
I hope this leaves you inspired to brighten up an elderly person’s day!
